Dr. Nielsen, PhD, has been an acupuncturist for over 45 years and authored the definitive textbook on traditional East Asian gua sha. She has a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies, integrative medicine, and health research. As an Assistant Clinical Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Department of Family Medicine & Community Health, Nielsen studies nonpharmacologic pain care, specifically acupuncture therapies for acute and chronic pain. She is a senior acupuncture consultant on NIH-funded multi-site trials of acupuncture for low back pain in adults 65 and older (HEAL grant) and acupuncture for acute pain in the emergency department.
Nielsen is past co-chair of the Pain Task Force, past executive board member of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health, and served on a 2014 Joint Commission Stakeholder Panel on pain that supported their 2018 mandate to provide nonpharmacologic options in hospital settings.
